Kevin DeByune celebrate his goal against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Manchester City put up a master-class of football game to defeat a formidable Chelsea side at the Stamford Bridge Stadium. This highly entertaining match between two giants of the Premier league was a firework of explosive football in which two contrasting tactics were at play throughout the duration of the game.

The first half of this match turned out to be an explosive affair , with Manchester City showing more attacking intent and enjoying majority of the ball possession.

Chelsea put up a very good use of their wing-back duo of Caesar Azpilicueta and Marco Alonso , who were forced to defend both flanks from the penetrating runs from Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane.

Sterling was very effective at the right flank, he combined very well with Kevin De Bryune and gave torrid time to Alonzo that was detailed to mark him at that position.

Chelsea’s defensive approach prevented Eden Hazard from influencing the game in the opponent’s final third. The Belgian play-maker was unusually anonymous throughout the game.

Alvaro Morata, who was later sidelined by what appeared to be a groin injury, had a chance to put Chelsea ahead in the third minute of the match, but his header of the ball from N’Golo Kante’s cross flew over the crossbar.

Thibault Courtois made a brilliant save of David Silva’s shot in the twenty eighth minute of the match. The Belgian international was on hand again to save Fernandinho bullet header from a De Bryune’s corner kick.

Chelsea kept to their defensive tactics in the second half, only making recourse to attacking play after conceding a goal in the sixty sixth minute.

Elderson Moraes saved an Eden Hazard’s shot from the left flank in the early exchanges of the second half.

A Manchester City’s attacking play ended with David Silva having an open chance to score in an unmarked position in Chelsea’s eighteen yard box, but his shot was deflected out of danger by the flying tackle of a Chelsea’s player who put his body on the line.

Manchester City eventually broke deadlock when a combination play between Gabriel Jesus and De Bryune freed the Belgian to fire a curling shot with his left foot into the net.

Manchester City’s goal prompted Antonio Conte to introduce Pedro Rodriguez and Michy Batshuayi into the game in order to add bite to his team’s offensive play.

What would have been City’s second goal was prevented when Gabriel Jesus’ effort inside Chelsea’s eighteen yard box took a deflection from Antonio Rudiger’s head and the ball flew out of the danger area.

Manchester City were able to defend the corner kicks and free kicks that were awarded to Chelsea in the closing minutes of the game with their defensive organization and possession football, which normally denies their opponent the chance to use the ball for their attacking play.

This match turned out to be a veritable advertisement for the Barclay’s Premier League ; and Manchester City by beating Chelsea, the league defending champion, have shown that they are one of  favourites to clinch this year league title.

Today’s victory is one Pep Guardiola would savour as the league goes on recess due to the international break. Manchester City once again moved to the summit of the league table, having been temporarily displaced by Manchester United who have superior points three hours before the Citizens played their match.
