Romelu Lukaku celebrates one of his goals against CSKA Moscow.

Manchester United won their second group match of 2017/18 UEFA Champions league match by defeating CSKA Moscow by four goals to one in VEB Arena in Moscow.

The first half of the match was dominated by Manchester United; they had majority of the ball possession; had  more fluidity in both their offensive and defensive play and they created more scoring chances than their opponent.

United scored their first goal as early as the fourth minute of the game. Romero Lukaku powered into the net a ball they came from Anthony Martial’s cross from the right-hand side of the opponent’s eighteen yard box.

The home team had a chance to equalize in the sixth minute of the game , but David DeGea was able to push out of danger the shot from Alan Dragoev inside his eighteen yard box.

A United’s attacking play inside the opponent’s eighteen yard box saw Igor Akinfeev making a save with his feet of a Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s effort from inside his eighteen yard box.

Martial scored United’s second goal from the penalty spot. The spot kick was awarded when Georgi Shchennikov felled Mkhitaryan inside his penalty box

Lukaku was performing brilliantly in the opponent’s half of the pitch – he won most aerial duels and fell back most times to receive the ball and distribute it to his team mates in vantage positions in the opponent’s half.

Antony Martial provided the second assist for United’s third goal when his cross from the left-hand side of the opponent’s eighteen box slipped through the up-lifted foot of Vasil Berezutski : thus enabling Lukaku to tuck the ball inside the net from the six yard box where he had been prowling.

David De Gea pulled a breathtaking save when he managed to punch out of danger a shot from Fedor Chavo taken from inside his eighteen yard box.

Manchester United continued their dominance of the game in the second half. And had it not been for saves from Igor Akinfeev, Mourinho’s players would have scored more goals in the second half. The CSKS Moscow’s keeper was able to deny Romero Lukaku, Jese Lingard and Matteo Darmian from scoring in one-on-one situations.

United scored their fourth and final goal of the match when Mkhitaryan fired into the net an Anthony Matial’s effort that Akinfeev had deflected in front of his post. Mkhitaryan reacted quicker than everybody inside the eighteen yard box and successfully raced to the ball before curling it into the net.

CSKA Moscow scored their lone goal of the match in the dying minutes of the game when they had a sustained attacking play in United’s half of the pitch. Second half substitute, Konstantin Kuchaev, raced onto a pass inside United’s eighteen yard box and curled a shot from an oblique angle into the goalpost.

Manchester United have now moved to the top of their group, having earned six points from their victories in their last two matches.
