Real Madrid beat Bayern Munich by two-goals-to-one in the first leg of this year UEFA Champions League Semi-final match played inside the Allianz Arena, Munich. This was an exciting match by two teams with a lot in common – illustrious histories in European competitions , success in both domestic and international competitions and an array of talented footballer in their employ.
Real Madrid, the two times defending champions of the competition, will now be heading into the second leg of the Semi-final match with an important win and two vital away goals
Joshua kimmich twenty-eight-minute goal was cancelled by Marcelo rocket shot from outside the eighteen yard box in the closing minutes of the first half of the match.
A mistake from Rafinha allowed Marco Asensio to score the winning goal for Real Madrid in the fifty sixth minute of the game. Rafinha mis-directed a pass to Asensio , who played a one-two with Lucas Vazquez which enabled them to launch a counter attack into the home team’s final third ; an onrushing goal keeper Uriech was easily beaten by the calm finish of Asensio.
As expected the two star-studded teams came into the game cautiously, with the home team showing greater offensive play as the game progressed.
During the opening exchanges, both teams completely neutralized each other ; Bayern had more chances to score a goal, with Mat Hummels, Frank Ribery and Thomas Muller missing glaring goal-scoring chances.
Franck Ribery came agonizingly close to scoring a second goal for Bayern in the thirty third minute of the match. A poor first touch let him down when he was fed a pass that put him a one-on-one situation with the opponent’s goal keeper , but the ball rolled off his foot and went right into the hands of Keylor Navas.
In the first twenty minutes of the match , Isco and Ronaldo were dangerous on the counter-attack from the left flank, but Bayern back-four kept their composure and were able to contain the counter -attacking forays of their opponent .
Injuries to both Arjen Robben and Jerome Boateng forced Jupp Heynckes to make two first half chances, which saw Rafinha replacing Robben and Nicklas Sule replacing Jerome Boateng.
On resumption of the second half, the visiting team showed more composure and enjoyed better ball distribution in the mid-field.
Frank Ribery caused all sorts of troubles for Real Madrid from the left flank , and it took several saves from Keylor Navas to prevent him from scoring.
After Asensio’s goal , Bayern poured forward in search of an equalizer, but Real Madrid’s players defended well and well able to snuff out most of the attacking play of the opponent.
Bayern had a clear chance to equalize in the dying minutes of the game when Corentine Tolisso cleverly fed a pass to Robert Lewandowski inside the opponent’s six yard box , but an onrushing Navas was able to deflect the ball out of play.
With today’s victory, Real Madrid have one leg in the final of the competition that will be taking place in Kiev in May, but the tie cannot be said to be over knowing that a team of Bayern caliber has the ability to cause an upset in the return leg of the match.
