Liverpool began this season’s Barclays Premier League campaign with an emphatic 4-0 win over West Ham United at Anfield. This was a match the Merseysiders dominated from the beginning to end with a brilliant brand of football that kept their fans enraptured while it lasted. The game had its little share of bizarre incident , which occurred when a young boy ran into the pitch to embrace Mohammed Salah during the closing minutes of the game.
“Attack versus defense ” is the apt expression that summed up the first forty-five minutes of the game . Liverpool had superior numbers in all the indices that are usually indicative of attacking football.
West Ham were subjected to barrage of attacking football from the outset of the match , with rusty Trent Alexander-Arnold being the first Liverpool players to trouble Lukasz Fabianski with his dangerous cross in the early minutes of the match.
Mohammed Salah scored for the home team in the eighteenth minutes of the game , slotting into the empty net a low cross from Andrew Robertson. The build-up to the goal was mainly initiated by Naby Keita whose dribbling run enabled Robertson to run into an unmarked position deep inside the opponent’s eighteen yard box.
Fabianski was on hand again in the twenty third minute of the match to prevent Alexander-Arnold’s free-kick from entering the net.
West Ham’s only clear goal-scoring chance came in the twenty sixth minute of the game when Marko Arnautovic received a long range pass from Angelo Ogbonna inside Liverpool’s eighteen yard box , but his final shot missed the goal-post.
Mohammed Salah almost scored a second goal from the six yard box in the thirty seventh minute only to be denied by Fabianski who deflected the shot out of danger.
Sadio Mane , who was causing all sorts of problems to West Ham from the left flank where he was positioned , scored in the penultimate minute of added time when he sliced into the open net a low cross from James Milner.
Liverpool deservedly ended the first half with a two-goal lead.
Liverpool kept their dominance of the game in the second period of the match , and their new goalkeeper Alisson Becker had almost nothing to do during this period.
Sadio Mane scored his second goal and Liverpool’s third goal eight minutes after the commencement of the second half , but video replay showed that he shot the ball into the net from an off-side position. The ferocity of the shot and the technique he employed in hitting the ball into the net were in themselves very praiseworthy , his off-side position notwithstanding.
When it became apparent to the home team that the Hammers had no chance of getting back into them match , their players started to entertain their fans with crisp passes and unceasing waves of attacking football.
Daniel Sturridge , who replaced Mohammed Salah with three minutes left in official time , scored Liverpool’s final goal just after twenty-four seconds of entering the pitch. The in-form striker curled into the net the ball that was deflected by an opponent to his front inside the six yard box.
Liverpool with their victory currently occupy the top of the League table , with four goals , (+4) goal differential and three points. The outcome of Manchester City and Arsenal match , coming up later today , will determine the league table standing three days after its commencement.
