Mohammed Salah celebrates his goal against Brighton and Hoves Albion.

Liverpool defeated Brighton and Hoves Albion by a lone goal scored by Mohammed Salah , and climb to the summit of the Barclays Premier League table.

Playing in front of a raucous home crowd at Anfield , Liverpool devastating attack was somewhat shackled by the good defensive shape of the seagulls.

The Reds dominated the first half of the game , enjoying majority of the ball possession and having more attempts at goal scoring.

Liverpool had their first chance at scoring when Trent Alexandre-Arnold struck the crossbar with his free-kick in the eighteenth minute of the march.

Salah scored Liverpool’s only goal in the twenty fourth minute of the game from a counter press situation – James Milner dispossessed Yves Bissouma in Brighton’s half of the pitch near the half-way line, passed the ball to Mane who in turn laid it to Firmino , and the Brazilian striker finally fed it to Salah and the Egyptian winger spun the ball into the far corner of the net.

Georgino Wijnaldum almost doubled Liverpool’s lead when he volleyed the ball from the Seagulls’ eighteen yard box towards their goalpost , but goal-keeper Ryan Matthew managed to punched the ball out of play.

The good goal-keeping of Ryan also prevented Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino from scoring with powerful headers from close proximity to his goal-post.

Brighton had a chance to equalize in the early minutes of the second half when Glen Murray successfully dribbled into Liverpool’s final third and fed a pass to Anthony Knockaert inside the opponent’s eighteen yard box , but the French  winger shot the ball wide from the goalpost.

Although Liverpool were still the more offensive side as the match entered the mid-portion of the second half , they lost the rhythm and fluency with which they launched their attacks in the period of the game.

With a quarter of an hour left in the match , Brighton started to play more attacking football. They almost scored in one of their offensive assaults but the effort was thwarted by goal-keeper Alisson Becker , who skillfully punched out of play Pascal Gross’ goal-bound header .

Alisson wowed Anfield faithfuls when under pressure from Knockaert – as they both raced towards the ball – skillfully chipped the ball over the onrushing Knockaert before passing the ball to his team mate.

Moments later Alisson almost lost the ball to Glen Murray inside his eighteen yard box , as he tried to dribble himself away from the burly striker , Murray momentarily got the ball only to be dispossessed by Alisson’s sliding tackle.
