Wolverhampton played an exciting two-two draw against visiting Everton in a Saturday Premier League fixture played at the Monileaux Stadium . The recently promoted team needed a late goal to get a point from the match after the Toffees , having had one of their players sent off in the first half of the match , scored a second goal on the resumption of the second half and held onto to the lead till the last eleven minutes of the game.
The first half of the match produced an aesthetically delightful brand of football from the two teams , which may have been due in part to their Portuguese coaches who may share the same football philosophy.
The game in the opening period saw the two teams scoring a goal apiece. Wolverhampton had superior ball possession , and they played a fluid form of possession football that is now generally known in football parlance as – tikitaka.
Everton’s new signing Richarlison scored the opening goal in the sixteenth minute of the game. He won the free-kick that resulted in the goal. In the build-up to the goal , Leighton Baines curled his free-kick into the opponent’s six yard box and a melee ensured , and a poor clearance from Wolverhampton’s defender was struck into the net by Richarlison.
Phil Jagielka was red-carded for stamping his foot on the leg of Diogo Jola , as the latter was racing to connect with a loose ball inside Everton’s eighteen yard box. Although Jagielka’s tackle was executed without malice , it put Diogo in great danger.
Ruben Neves scored from the free-kick that was awarded to Wolverhampton on account of the tackle on Diogo Jola. He skillfully curled the ball into the far corner of the net , beating Jordan Pickford whose view was obstructed by his own wall.
Despite their numerical disadvantage, Everton came out of the blocks on the resumption of the second half, attacking the home team whenever the opportunities came their way.
Cenk Tosun came close to scoring in the fifty eighth minute of the game , but his shot from inside the opponent’s eighteen yard was pushed out of danger by goalkeeper Rui Patricio.
Wolveshampton continued to dominate the ball possession , and they stuck to their fluid passing game as they sought for a winning goal.
Raul Jimenez failed to beat Jordan Pickford in a one-on-one situation inside Everton’s eighteen yard box , and his final shot was punched out of danger by the spectacular effort of Pickford.
Richarlison beat Rui Patricio with a curling shot to put the side ahead for the second time in the match. The Brazilian winger was a constant thorn in the opponent’s flesh with his direct play , his dribbling runs , and general arrogance whenever he had the ball at his feet.
Raul Jimenez equalized for the home side in the seventy ninth minute of the match when he headed the ball from a well-stuck cross from Ruben Neves into the roof of the net.
The final score of this game turned out to be a true reflection of the efforts both teams put into the game. What cannot be correctly guessed is what the outcome would have been had Everton ended the match with eleven players.
