Joel Matip celebrates his goal against Southampton.

Liverpool won their sixth consecutive Premier League match of the season at Anfield , beating Southampton by three-goals-to-nothing in a match that was characterized by the Reds’ total dominance of the entire game.

Liverpool were the dominant side in the first half of the match in which the enjoyed majority of the ball possession, had more goal-scoring attempts and scored three brilliantly goals during the same period.

Southampton threatened to score in the fourth minute when Shane Long was fed a pass inside Liverpool’s eighteen yard box , but Virgil Van Dijk sliding tackle prevented him from getting the poise to shoot at goal.

In one of Liverpool attacking forays inside the Saints final third , a combination play between Roberto Firmino and Mohammed Salah at the edge of the eighteen yard box enabled Salah to receive the final pass inside the eighteen yard box , but Cedric Soares’ challenge forced the Egyptian winger to shoot a feeble shot that narrowly missed  goalpost.

Liverpool scored in the tenth minutes through a Wesley Hoed’s own goal , the Dutch national deflected a Xherdan Shaqiri’s curling shot that had taken an initial deflection from a team mate into the net.

Southampton occasionally penetrated Liverpool’s final third but the robust defending of the home team’s back-line dealt with all the threats thrown at them at such moments.

Joel Matip , starting his first Premier League match for the Reds, scored his side’s second goal in the twenty first minute of the game, the towering central half powered a Salah’s corner-kick into the far corner of the goalpost.

The second half of the match had the semblance of a training session, with Liverpool playing as though they were contented with their three-goal lead and the  Saints apparently satisfied  with passing the ball among themselves as long as they did not concede more goals.

Salah scored Liverpool’s third goal in the last minute of the added time in the first half. The Egyptian was fouled outside the Saints’ eighteen yard box and a free-kick was awarded to Liverpool , which Shaqiri played and hit the crossbar with his strike , Salah then smashed the rebound into the roof of the net.

The only dark spot in the home team’s victory was when Van Dijk was replaced due to an injury he had picked up few minutes into the second stanza of the game.

In one moment of Liverpool’s attack in the opponent’s eighteen yard box , Salah scored a goal that was ruled as off-side.

In the final minute of normal time, the Saints’ second half substitute , Charlie Austin ,  had his shot from inside Liverpool’s eighteen yard box punched out of danger by goalkeeper Alisson Becker , and that effort was the only shot Southampton had on target throughout out the second half of the match.

Liverpool with today’s victory have returned to the summit of the League table for the meantime.
