Some Liverpool’s players celebrate one of their goals against Wolverhampton Wanderers

Liverpool entered the Christmas period occupying the top of the League table after handing a two-zero defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers in a Friday Barclays Premier League fixture played inside the Molineux Stadium .

The Reds , with this victory , maintained their unbeaten run in eighteen League games , and now tops the table with forty-eight points , four points above second-placed Manchester City who still have an outstanding game.

The Reds dominated both halves of the match , but met a formidable and tactically drilled opponent who maintained their defensive discipline while occasionally troubling their more star-studded opponent with dangerous counter-attacks.

Poor passes from Fabinho and Naby Keita in the opening half of the game afforded the home team goal-scoring chances but the Reds’ goal-keeper, Alisson Becker, came to the rescue at such instances.

Liverpool scored their first goal through Mohammed Salah when the the dashing number eleven flicked a reverse cross fron Fabinho with the side of his foot into the net . The Egyptian winger has so far scored eleven league goals this season.

Salah was a constant threat to the home team with his dashing run, inter-linking play and his good positional sense, and it took the brilliant goal-keeping of Rui Patricio to prevent him from scoring more goals.

Virgil Van Dijk was once again imperious in Liverpool back line ; the Dutch central half dealt with the lightning speed of Adama Traore , won most of the aerial battles in his half of the pitch and crowned his effort with a superbly scored goal in the sixty eighth minute of the game.

In the build-up to Van Dijk’s goal, the towering Dutch defender peeled away from his markers inside the opponent’s eighteen yard box and poked a long ball from Mohammed Salah into the net with his left foot.

The Wanderers had a clear chance to half their goal deficit in the dying minutes of the game. Andrew Robinson poor clearance inside his eighteen yard box fell in front of an onrushing Morgan Gibbs White , but the youngster’s final shot only hit the side netting.

During the five minutes of added time , it was evident that the Reds wanted to see out the game , as they confined their play to the corner flank to wind down the minutes. However, Georgino Wijnaldum missed the chance to triple his side’s lead when the ball fell right in front of him in an unmarked position inside the opponent’s eighteen yard box but his final shot lacked precision and missed the goal-post by few inches.

Today this Liverpool team played like a well-oiled machine – they operated as a very cohesive unit in the midfield, attack and defence. The inter-switch of positions amongst the trio of Mane, Salah and Roberto Firmino created torrid time for the home side. The only negative to the Reds’ victory was the injury sustained by Naby Keita , who was later replaced by Adam Lallana.

This Liverpool team , barring the ill-fortune of injury , has what it takes to mount a title challenge this term , and it is going to be a fiercely contested battle between them and Manchester City for the League crown.
